COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

CUNY APPLICATION

The CUNY on-line applicatiion can be filled out by going to CUNY.edu. Please understand that this is the only way you can submit an application to the CUNY colleges. THE DUE DATE FOR ALL CUNY APPLICATIONS TO BE SUBMITTED IS NOVEMBER 18.PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT THE SUBMISSION PROCESS ALSO MEANS THAT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT, SAT SCORES AND PAYMENT MUST BE MADE BY THIS DEADLINE DATE. I will give each senior a copy of their transcript, which includes your ranking in the senior class by. The only way that you will be able to receive your transcript with rank is if you have submitted your CUNY application and have printed out a copy of the application, which will be your receipt that you will have to show me to obtain the transcript. If you do not submit your CUNY on-line application with the appropriate documents by November 18, you run the risk of NOT hearing from any CUNY school until next summer. This past graduating class experienced several CUNY schools cutting off the submission of applications in the late spring. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure that you have submitted all required documents--transcript and SAT scores. When filling out the CUNY application, be sure that you include your OSIS number. By doing so, CUNY will automatically pull your transcript and you will NOT have to send them a copy. Because of the huge number of CUNY applications that were submitted this past year, if you do not submit your materials in a timely manner, you will not get the kind of response you hoped for.

The fee waivers for eligible students for CUNY are EXTREMELY LIMITED, and when they are gone there will be no more. If you have a part time job, it is important that you save your money to help pay for your college applications. Please DO NOT COME TO ASK ME about these waivers, I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN FEE WAIVERS ARE AVAILABLE and how they will be distributed. The first thing that you should do is to fill out an on-line CUNY application (SAVE IT, DO NOT SEND IT) before seeking for a fee waiver. I will let you know when these fee waivers are available by putting a notice on this blog. It is up to you to read the blog daily!!!

SUNY APPLICATION

All SUNY Applications must be submitted by December 9,2011. SUNY Applications must be submitted on-line and your supporting documents like the transcript, SAT/ACT scores must be sent directly to their processing center in Albany. If you are taking your SAT/ACT exam in November, the College Board, on the exam, gives you approximately four to six spaces to fill in any college of university that you want your scores sent to be sent to. You should utilize these spaces by filling in the four to six top schools where you want your scores to go for FREE. If you do not do this, you will then be charge $10, by the College Board, for each college/university that you want them to send your scores to. When SUNY receives your on-line application, they in turn send me, your college advisor, a post card letting me know that they need to receive a transcript and scores. It would be a good idea for you check with me to see if I received a post card for you regarding your application. APPLICATIONS FOR A SUNY FEE WAIVER CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE COLLEGE OFFICE ROOM 239. This form must be filled out, signed by a parent and then signed by me before you send it off to the processing center in Albany. They will decide if you qualify for a fee waiver. If you do not, they will bill you for each school you have applied to. Remember, each school costs $50!!

PRIVATE COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS

Applications for private colleges and universities can be done on-line. Some colleges have their own on-line school application, which some times require no fee. A number of these same colleges/univerisities also use the Common Application, which can also be found on-line. Approximately 460 colleges and universities use the Common Application (this application can be found at commonapp.org). If you use the Common Application, you can invite your Guidance Counselor to complete her portion of the application on-line, which will include up-loading a copy of your transcript. Teachers who are preparing recommendations for you can also be invited to up-load their recommendations into your Common Application on-line. THE DEADLINE DATE FOR ALL PRIVATE COLLGE/UNIVERSITY
APPLICATIONS TO BE SUBMITTED IS DECEMBER 9, 2011. If you do not wish to use the Common Application as a on-line tool but would like to use the application in paper form, please see me for instructions.

COVER SHEETS

All college/university applications will require that you leave a Cover Sheet in the designated boxes in the back of the college office for each school that you are applying to. This way I can keep track of where you are applying. If you are submitting a paper application to your guidance counselor or a secondary school report forms from the colleges for your counselors for comments and signature, this will all require that I see the paperwork and initial the top of the cover sheet before you submit the application or forms to them. DO NOT GIVE YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR ANY PAPER APPLICATION OR SECONDARY SCHOOL REPORT FORMS WITHOUT ME SEEING THE PAPER WORK FIRST.>

SAT FEE WAIVERS

I will only give SAT FEE WAIVERS to those students who are eligible and who have gone on-line and completed and saved (do not submit)their SAT application. Only then will you be able to receive a fee waiver, which will allow you to go back into to your application and enter the code number from the waiver and then submit your application. PLEASE REMEMBER SENIORS MUST MEET THE FINANCIAL GUIDELINES SET UP BY THE COLLEGE BOARD IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A FEE WAIVER. A COPY OF THOSE GUIDELINES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE COLLEGE OFFICE. HOWEVER, THE BEST DOCUMENTATION FOR ME TO DETERMINE IF YOU MEET THE QUAILIFICATIONS IS TO BRING IN A COPY OF YOUR PARENTS 1040 TAX FORM fo 2010. I DO NOT KEEP THE TAX FORM, I JUST NEED TO SEE IT IN ORDER TO MAKE THE DETERMINATION. PLEASE DO NOT JUST BRING IN YOUR PARENTS W-2 FORM or the first page of the 1040 tax form. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I NEED TO SEE THE ENTIRE 1040 TAX FORM. IF YOUR PARENTS DO NOT FILE A 1040 TAX FORM, PLEASE CHECK THE GUIDELINES IN MY OFFICE WHICH WILL INDICATE WHAT OTHER OPTIONS CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE YOUR ELIGIBILITY.

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES

I have scheduled over 80 colleges and universities to visit our high school to speak to you about their individual institutions. I have posted the schedule, date and time, for these visits outside the college office door, which will take place in the College Office room 239. I will also announce who is coming and on what date and time they are coming each Monday and Wednesday on our school public address system. Please take note of these announcements when they are made.
